The money making potential and the fact that it's a single county duchy, and isolated, makes it a very appealing target. On a side note, I always try to find an excuse to grab Venice. At that point, a ridiculous economy and mercenaries trump any problem. As Italy, it becomes even less of an issue since you arguably have two of the best money making county/duchies right next to you (Genoa and Venice - single county duchies), and a third in Pisa once developed fully. at that point, troops are important, but overall the least of your worries, and other things, like council and faction management, make a greater impact. I tend to be a very weird builder anyway (in regards to common conception), and usually focus on a single county with many castles versus having many counties, mostly just for the capital troop bonus, so numbers is rarely an issue for me except when I start turning into a massive empire. Minmaxing your retinue is a great argument and all, but I think it ultimately makes very little difference in the grand scheme of things, or at least not as important as the discussion makes it out to be. Personally, I'm with you on using what you find appealing. Pikemen is generally considered to be the best retinue at this time, with skirmish behind it for the aforementioned reasons.

Though it depends on what you're trying to accomplish and the tactics you use. That cavalry ret is too expensive for what it provides, and the skirmish is the most useful overall since numbers suppress factions and tend to make more of a difference in battle than smart management of your troops. If we were to talk about the worst retinue combat-wise (as in, if you had a tournament bracket with the retinues fighting each other, who would be at the bottom?) would probably the Skirmish retinue, with only 50 more Archer than LS with the 400 Light Infantry replaced by 50 Heavy Infantry. That being said, I'd consider the Light Skirmish retinue to be the worst, if only because they provide you Archers and Light Infantry, the former of which has incredibly low morale and non-skirmish stats with the latter being somewhat expendable with it easily being acquired in non-retinue form. You can't complain about 500 cavalry, 100 of them Heavy. Playing as the kind of Ireland, I've had two Cavalry retinues for quite a while and it's been a great investment. It's more or less the only way, outside of heavily upgraded Stables and Mercenaries, to reliably access Heavy Cavalry (the second best troop type in the game behind War Elephants), and they come with a sizable bonus of 200 light cavalry to boot, which is a pretty good all-round troop type. Personally, I consider the Cavalry retinue to be the best (at least with regards to generic retinues).
